Dog Breed Match Quiz
Five quick questions about your exercise time, living space, household, and grooming tolerance — we'll match your answers against real breed traits and suggest which of our featured breeds fit best.
How to use it: answer honestly based on your actual daily reality, not your ideal — the match is only as useful as the inputs.
Based on general breed-level tendencies — individual dogs vary a lot depending on their specific upbringing and training. Meet any breed in person before deciding.
How matching works
Each of our featured breeds is rated 1-5 across five traits: energy level, apartment-friendliness, good-with-kids, grooming needs, and first-time-owner friendliness. Your answers are compared against those ratings, and the three breeds with the closest overall fit are shown. Want the full list? Browse all breed guides.
How accurate is it?
This is a starting point for narrowing options, not a guarantee of compatibility — breed-level ratings describe general tendencies, and individual dogs within any breed vary based on their specific breeding line, upbringing, and training. Two Labradors raised differently can end up with noticeably different energy levels and temperaments. Use a strong match as a reason to research that breed further and meet one in person, not as a final decision.
Frequently asked questions
How are the breed traits actually rated — is this scientific?
Each featured breed is rated 1-5 across five traits (energy level, apartment-friendliness, good-with-kids, grooming needs, first-time-owner friendliness) based on general breed-level tendencies from AKC and veterinary breed references — the same consensus sources used across our breed guides, not a formal peer-reviewed temperament study. Think of it as an informed starting point for narrowing options, not a scientific personality-matching algorithm.
What if none of my top 3 matches feel right?
That's useful information too — it usually means one of your answers is pulling harder than expected (grooming tolerance and living space tend to have the biggest effect on which breeds surface). Try adjusting one answer at a time to see which factor is driving the results, or just browse the full breed guide list directly if you already have a few breeds in mind and want to compare them head to head.
Does this account for mixed-breed dogs?
Not directly — the quiz matches against our featured purebred profiles, since mixed-breed temperament is inherently less predictable from parentage alone. If you're specifically considering a mixed-breed puppy, the closest purebred matches here are still a reasonable proxy for what traits to expect, especially if you know which breeds are in the mix.
Why only 3 matches instead of a full ranked list?
Three keeps the focus on genuinely strong fits rather than a long tail of mediocre ones — past the top few, the scoring differences between breeds get small enough that the ranking order isn't that meaningful. If you want to compare more broadly, browsing all breed guides directly lets you filter by the specific traits that matter most to you.
