If your dog ate chocolate, call now — don't wait for symptoms.US: ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661, both 24/7 (a fee may apply). UK: Animal PoisonLine 01202 509000. Or call your own vet or nearest emergency clinic.

Quick answer: chocolate becomes dangerous at about20 mg of theobromine and caffeine per kg of your dog's body weight (vomiting, diarrhea), 40-50 mg/kg (racing or irregular heartbeat), and 60 mg/kg or more (tremors and seizures). The darker the chocolate, the less it takes — cocoa powder is over 12 times as potent as milk chocolate.

Estimated dose

An estimate, not a diagnosis. Recipes and cacao content vary, and dogs with heart disease or other conditions can react at lower doses. When in doubt, call your vet or a poison control line.

Why chocolate is poisonous to dogs

Chocolate contains theobromine and a smaller amount of caffeine, both stimulants in a family called methylxanthines. People break theobromine down quickly; dogs clear it very slowly, so it builds up and overstimulates the heart and nervous system. That's why the same square of dark chocolate that's harmless to you can make a small dog seriously ill.

Chocolate poisoning symptoms and timeline

DoseWhat you may see
~20 mg/kgVomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst and urination, restlessness
40-50 mg/kgRacing or irregular heartbeat, panting, agitation
60+ mg/kgMuscle tremors, seizures, collapse

Signs usually show up 6-12 hours after eating and can last up to 72 hours in severe cases. That delay is the reason to call before symptoms appear: if your dog is seen within about 2 hours, a vet may be able to make them vomit up the chocolate and give activated charcoal before most of it is absorbed.

How the calculator works

It multiplies the amount eaten by the methylxanthine content of that type of chocolate, then divides by your dog's weight in kg to get a dose in mg/kg — the same number a poison control specialist works out. That dose is compared against the thresholds published in the Merck Veterinary Manual. Where a source gives a range of theobromine content, we use the top of the range, so the calculator leans toward caution rather than reassurance.

Chocolate typeTheobromine + caffeine
White chocolate0.04 mg/g (1 mg/oz)
Milk chocolate (most candy bars)2.3 mg/g (65 mg/oz)
Semisweet / dark under 70% (chocolate chips)5.6 mg/g (159 mg/oz)
Dark chocolate 70-85% cacao8.8 mg/g (249 mg/oz)
Unsweetened baker's chocolate / 85%+ bars15.5 mg/g (439 mg/oz)
Cocoa powder (unsweetened, dry)28.5 mg/g (808 mg/oz)
Cocoa bean hull garden mulch9 mg/g (255 mg/oz)

Baked goods like brownies and chocolate cake are hard to estimate — it depends on the recipe. If the recipe used cocoa powder or baking chocolate, treat it as more dangerous than milk chocolate and call.

Frequently asked questions

How much chocolate is toxic to a dog?

It depends on your dog's weight and how dark the chocolate is. Veterinary references put the first signs (vomiting, diarrhea) at about 20 mg of theobromine and caffeine per kg of body weight, heart effects at 40-50 mg/kg, and seizures at 60 mg/kg or more. For a 20 lb dog that means roughly 2.8 oz (79 g) of milk chocolate can cause stomach upset, but only 0.22 oz (6 g) of cocoa powder does the same.

My dog ate chocolate but seems fine. Am I in the clear?

Not yet. Signs usually appear 6-12 hours after eating chocolate and can last up to 72 hours in severe cases, so a dog that looks normal an hour later can still become ill. Call your vet or a poison control line now — if it has been less than about 2 hours, your vet may be able to make your dog vomit before most of the chocolate is absorbed.

Which chocolate is most dangerous for dogs?

Cocoa powder, then unsweetened baker's chocolate, then high-cacao dark chocolate. Gram for gram, cocoa powder carries over 12 times the theobromine of milk chocolate. White chocolate contains almost none, although its fat and sugar can still upset a dog's stomach or trigger pancreatitis.

How much chocolate can kill a dog?

The Merck Veterinary Manual lists the lethal dose range as 100-200 mg/kg, and notes that roughly 1 oz of milk chocolate per pound of body weight can be lethal. That's a lot of milk chocolate for a large dog, but a small dog that gets into baking chocolate or cocoa powder can reach dangerous levels with a very small amount. Don't wait for the lethal range — seizures can start at a third of it.

Should I make my dog throw up after eating chocolate?

Don't do it on your own. Home methods can be dangerous and don't always work, and inducing vomiting is the wrong call for some dogs. Call your vet or a poison control line first — they'll tell you whether vomiting is appropriate, and it's generally only useful within about 2 hours of eating.

Is this calculator a substitute for calling the vet?

No. It uses the same basic math a poison control specialist uses — dose per kg of body weight — so it can help you describe the situation and understand how urgent it is. But chocolate recipes vary, you may not know exactly how much was eaten, and dogs with heart conditions or other illnesses can react at lower doses. Always call.
